Rules


1. INTRODUCTION:

  1. Competition at the IRON PYRO™ Event will feature three Contestants previously chosen from a body of entrants.
  2. All entrants must be at least 21 years of age and a member in good standing of the Pyrotechnics Guild International (PGI).
  3. The Competition is open to Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) of the USA.
  4. Entrants will be required to provide sufficient evidence of pyrotechnic experience to satisfy the Organizers of their knowledge and ability.
  5. Each of the three selected Contestants must script and choreograph an original six to ten minute live Firework Presentation in conjunction with music of their own choice (“Show”).
  6. Contestants will be chosen by the Organizers from applications received before the announced deadline. Entrants will be judged on their experience, and creative merits of their video applications. The 3 final contestants chosen will be subject to final approval from the PGI Board.

2. FIREWORKS

  1. Shogun Pyrotechnics will select and provide to each Contestant all Fireworks (“Fireworks”) that will be used in the Event, in addition to a limited quantity of quickmatch, electric igniters, and scab wire. No additional fireworks (including delay fuses), either manufactured by Shogun/Vulcan or by other manufacturers, may be used in the Contestant’s Show.
  2. All non-fireworks equipment and materials supplied to Contestants by Shogun remain the property of Shogun.

3. CONTESTANTS’ RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. All three contestants will be required to sign a Performance Contract with Shogun, committing to the successful completion of their Shows. Contestants will be required to make a deposit of $500 USD to Shogun by 1st May 2009. The deposit is to be held until after the Event. In case of any one of the following occurrences, the deposit will be forfeited:  
    a) No-show on the day of the Event (with the exception of personal emergencies supported by valid documentation),
    b) Non-completion of Show (unless through no fault of Contestants), or
    c) Cancellation by Contestants after signing their Performance Contract with Shogun (with the exception of personal emergencies supported by valid documentation)
    Deposit will be returned within 7 days after the successful completion of Show. In the event of any disputes arising from the above, final decision will be decided by the PGI Board.
  2. Before 1st April 2009, Contestants will be given a complete listing of the selected Fireworks that must be used in their Shows along with a DVD and timing list so that they may begin scripting the Show.
  3. Before 1st June 2009, the final 3 Contestants must submit the following to the Organizers:
    a) A show description setting out the “Name” of the Show, in addition to the theme and characteristics of their Show.
    b) A script file of their designed Show with music selection and, if possible, a simulation of their Show
    c)The list of Personnel that will assist set up of the Show.
  4. In case of any changes to Section 3.3, the Organizers must be informed before the commencement of the PGI Convention.
  5. All equipment and materials (such as racks, mortars, lumber, foil, plastic sheets, plastic straps etc.) needed to set up and fire each Show is the responsibility of the Contestants. Contestants will need to provide the required amount of 2-1/2”, 3”, 4”, 5”, 6” and 8” racks as needed to execute their program.
  6. All Fireworks must be electrically fired (no manual lighting).  Firing systems must be provided by and will be the responsibility of the Contestants who must be capable of firing a fully choreographed musical display.  Contestants must have prior experience using their desired system, and be able to deploy, set up, troubleshoot, and operate the system.
  7. Each Contestant must have a minimum of two but no more than seven Personnel to assist in setting up their Show. This is to keep the playing field level. Each team must be able to set up their Show in the allotted time.
  8. All Personnel must be 18 years or older, be a PGI Member in good standing, and have prior experience setting up and working with consumer and display fireworks. The Contestant and all Personnel must be registered for the PGI convention.
  9. Contestants and their Personnel may not disassemble, modify or alter any of the Fireworks provided for the Event with the exception of flighting shells, cutting apart finale chains, shortening quickmatch leaders, and attaching electric matches.
  10. Contestants will be allowed a minimum of two days on the display site for set up of their Display before the actual Event.  Request for dates and space must be coordinated with and approved by the PGI Production Chairman.
  11. All Contestants, in conjunction with PGI Safety Personnel, will be responsible for their own assessment of the Site, including preparation of site plan, firing positions and adequate risk assessment. Decisions of PGI Safety Personnel are final.
  12. Contestants will be required to remove all equipment and trash by 10am the day following their display, in accordance with the 2009 PGI Display Information Booklet, page 8, Clean Up and Trash. This booklet will be made available to final Contestants.
  13. Subcontracting of Shows for the Event is strictly prohibited.
  14. Contestants agree to be available for interviews by ’76 Pyro and/or by other media companies to promote and market the Iron Pyro Event.
  15. Contestants agree to allow Shogun and their related companies to use their name and videos from their Show for future marketing and promotional purposes.

4. GENERAL COMPETITION RULES AND SAFETY

  1. Contestants are required to use at least 90% of fireworks supplied in their Shows. Any unfired Fireworks remaining after the Event does not become the property of the Contestants but will be donated to the PGI for disposal.
  2. Fireworks used at the Event will be subject to change due to weather conditions and on-field decisions by the PGI Safety Committee, in accordance with current PGI safety regulations.
  3. The firing order of the 3 contestants will be decided by draw, one month before the Event. This would only change if it is determined by the PGI Production Chairman that changing the shooting order could offer additional protection to all contestants due to wind directions. All contestants should be prepared to protect their display from falling embers from other displays.
  4. All Contestants must follow the official PGI Convention Safety Rules, which can be found at the PGI official website:  http://www.pgi.org/PGIconvsafety.htm
  5. All Contestants must submit a PGI Use of Display Site application to the PGI Production Chairman by 4th July 2009. This form will be supplied to final Contestants.
  6. The Organizers will carry out random checks during setup to determine whether allowable Fireworks are being used in accordance with the Rules.
  7. Contestants should be aware that video crews may be recording the setup and preparation of the Competition for documentation and future marketing of the Iron Pyro Event.
  8. The Contestant, in accepting the rules and taking part in the Competition, takes full responsibility for themselves and their Personnel in the safe and proper use of all provided pyrotechnics and related equipment used in the Show. 
  9. All Contestants must act in a safe manner.  Any breach of safety putting their own Personnel, fellow Contestants, Organizers, Members of the PGI, or the General Public at unnecessary risk will lead to summary disqualification from the Competition and subsequent consequences from the PGI Organization.
  10. Failure to follow the Rules listed herein will disqualify a Contestant from Iron Pyro Competition.
  11. The Iron Pyro Event is dependent on the shipping situation of 1.3G fireworks from China to the USA. In the event that fireworks selected for the Iron Pyro event cannot be shipped in time for the PGI Convention in Mason City, Iowa, the Event will be postponed.
  12. All decisions made by the Organizers will be considered final.
